Quick fast museum hopping in Paris is just not possible if you don't buy a Paris Pass and I learned the hard way. Perhaps it's the season you go, April - June is peak season in Paris, so lines were extremely long. I managed to get to Chateau Versailles just when it opened and was really proud that I missed the queue. When I left around 11am there was about 1 hour wait just to buy tickets, there's a separate line for security checks. At the Chateau Versailles they only have 1 xray/scanner machine, so you can imagine how long that would take.
Then I went to Saint Chapelle for another hour lineup just to pass security and then another line to buy tickets. To enter the Notre dame Cathedral is free, but there's also a line! If you want to climb the Notre Dame stairs to the stop, it's another 1-2 hour wait to buy tickets. The Louvre museum is about 2 hour wait depending on time of day. Early morning is about a 20 min wait, later in the evening, the queue is about an hour wait. Not to mention the 4 stations under the pyramid to buy tickets into the Louvre. Rick Steves is right, it's a ZOO in Louvre. Musee D'Orsay another huge line and the Eiffel Tower has a crazy line too during the day. PLUS all the museums are not right beside each other, so it only makes it easy to buy the Paris pass with the metro included.
I was one of the suckers stuck in line at each place. Don't be me. Seriously. I just can't stand lineups and so I skipped a few museums I wanted to see. I don't want you to suffer the same fate I did. Get the Paris pass! Paris Pass holders get the express lines and stroll right in afterwards. Anywayss, lesson learned. Next time if I go I'm definitely buying the Paris Pass. You should too. It's worth every penny.
